I hope that you are all well and are enjoying the lovely weather we’ve had lately. It was a really nice surprise to be able to sit outside all evening when we had our meet-up at the harbour at the end of April. Let’s hope that the summer continues to bless us with lots of sunshine and opportunities to gather with friends in the fresh air.

As you will know from the last newsletter, our ‘Coffee Club’ meeting was last weekend, rather than mid-month, but don’t worry, your next chance for a get-together will be on Friday, 27th May, from 7pm onwards, at ‘Biero – Schmid & Hops’ (www.biero-lindau.de), In der Grub 36 (a few houses along from the Irish pub). This is a relatively new venue on the island (we met there for the first time last September) but has established itself as a popular place to meet, especially with the locals. The hand-crafted beers are brewed on the premises (you actually walk past the ‘kettles’ when you go inside) and the wines are also from local organic wineries. There’s a selection of snacks on the menu, from Flammkuchen to various sausages dishes and cheese dishes, all of which have been sourced locally, and organically where possible. If you’re new, don’t know what we look like and aren’t sure where we’re sitting, please just ask the staff and they’ll point you in our direction.

For any of you who are looking for something entertaining for children, then the upcoming performance of “Rotkäppchen” (Little Red Riding Hood) by the Stadtorchester Friedrichshafen might be just the ticket. Our member, Martha Gietl, plays in the woodwind section of the orchestra and passed the information on to me. It’s not going to be in English (the text by Roald Dahl has been translated into German), but it will still certainly appeal to children from 5 years old upwards. It takes place on Sunday, 29th May at 4pm, at the Graf-Zeppelin-Haus and the performance lasts 50-60 minutes. Tickets cost 4€. More on the music front….this time for fans of Irish music: there’s a local band playing Irish music which I found out about online, by the name of Lanigans (www.lanigans.de) They have a few concerts coming up, including an open-air gig in Theatron Scheidegg on Friday, 3rd June, a matinée in the Schwarzen Hasen in Wangen on 3rd July and also a concert in the woods at Skywalk Scheidegg on 8th July. See the website for more details (I saw that there’s a whisky tasting in September and a couple of Christmas concerts planned).

Celtic sounds aplenty, as well as the annual Allgäu Highland Games, will be part of the Folk im Allgäu festival on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June. The location will be at Uttenhofen / Leutkirch, with camping places free-of-charge, and the programme is available on www.folk-im-allgaeu.de/festival.html

Members, Alisa and Florian Heutmann are opening up their own comedy club in Isny this week. The venue is Neuen Ringtheater / Kino Isny and there will be a monthly comedy night, taking place on the following dates: 17th May, 28th June, 26th July, 23rd August, 20th September and 25th October. Doors open at 7pm and the shows start at 7.30pm. Food and drinks available before and after the show. The acts are going to be German comedians, but there may be an English-speaking comedian at one of the nights.
